There were still coals of fire in the ashes and before you know it the fire was blazing. Also it helped that the wood was very dry.
We went in to eat lunch. In less than an hour from the time the fire started to blaze the tree fell.
On May 8, 2010 we decided that we were going to try to burn an old dead oak tree. It had died from a disease called "Oak Wilt". We sure hated loosing that tree and the other 3 like it. It is very expensive to have these big old trees taken down so we decided we would do it ourselves. On this particular weekend Ronnie, Jennifer and Kae were here. Ronnie is a very hard and good worker so we got started. Ronnie started by boring holes in the trunk of the tree and filling them with diesel.
Then we started piling logs around the base of the tree. We don't have a fireplace that burns wood so we can't use it. It's kind of a shame to watch all that good firewood go up in flames but unless you are willing to cut it up, split it and deliver it all for free; people don't really want it.
We even had the paparazzi here for pictures!!!

We even made a game out of this event. Do you see the speck in the air over the tree? That's a stick! We were throwing sticks to see if we could hit the flaming knot hole. I believe Jennifer and Ronnie both made it but you can rest assured that I didn't make it..jpg)
Kae was here as our audience and a very good audience she was!!
As of today May 16, 2010, it is still burning and it hasn't fallen yet.
Can you see the white space as the base of the tree in the middle just above the ash? That's a hole that goes all the way through the tree. The base of the tree is getting very small. Anybody care to guess the date the tree will fall?
The fire is burning at the base and the root of the tree. There is a very large hole at the base of the tree where the roots have burned away.
While SON was up there he found that there were 2 raccoons hold up in a hollow place in the tree and they were fighting mad. They had to be moved before the project could continue.
